October 21, 2015 is the day that Marty McFly played by Michael J. Fox traveled back to the future in the film Back to the Future part 2. The Nike Cortez was a pivotal shoe for the Nike brand, previously known as Blue Ribbon Sports. Created in 1972 by legendary University of Oregon track coach Bill Bowman, the Nike Cortez was again brought to popularity when worn by Tom Hanks in his role as Forrest Gump in the movie by the same name. The signature line "Run Forrest" is portrayed as the phrase and shoe itself played a prominent role in Forrest's cross country run in the film.
This painting is based off of the Vans checkerboard slip ons worn by Jeff Spicoli played by a young Sean Penn in the movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High. The shoe was originally released in 1979 and the quote comes from Spicoli himself as he hits himself in the head with this fresh pair of vans while talking to his friend on the phone.
